Taiwo Awoniyi statement made as Nottingham Forest issue update

Nottingham Forest have issued a statement on Taiwo Awoniyi.

The Reds have confirmed the striker has undergone “urgent surgery” on an abdominal injury he suffered during their 2-2 Premier League draw with Leicester City at the City Ground on Sunday.

Awoniyi crashed into a post as he tried to convert a cross into the penalty area from Anthony Elanga in the closing stages of the match.

He received treatment before returning to the pitch for the final minutes.

“The Club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” Forest said in a statement.

“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo.

“The Club will provide further updates when appropriate.”

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo had been given the thumbs up by the medical team for Awoniyi to continue playing against the Foxes, but he was clearly struggling.

Club owner Evangelos Marinakis was unhappy about the situation, calling it a “misjudgement” from the medical staff in a statement on Sunday night, having stormed onto the pitch after the final whistle.

“Everybody – coaching staff, players, supporters and including myself – we were frustrated around the injury of Taiwo and the medical staff’s misjudgement on Taiwo’s ability to continue the game,” he said.
