ICE agent shoots man in Austin as city officials call for independent investigation

A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and seriously wounded a man in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, according to city officials.

According to Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, the man suffered a gunshot wound to his torso and was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center in stable but serious condition.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said, the shooting happened shortly before 1:00 PM on the city’s north side and may have followed a foot chase involving the ICE agent

Democratic Congressman Greg Casar told CNN the man works as a delivery driver. Officials have not confirmed whether he is a US citizen or was the target of an ICE operation.

Austin police were not involved in the shooting but are assisting with the investigation alongside the Texas Rangers.

Watson said he was “very angry” and “extremely unhappy” about the incident.

“While I’m unhappy and I’m angry about it, I’m not surprised at all. It’s happened in other cities with the nature of ICE and the way ICE is doing its business these days,” Watson said.

“We need the facts in this case to really understand what fully happened, but what we are seeing from ICE in Texas and across the country is unacceptable,” he told CNN.
