Cristiano Ronaldo suspended as Portugal opens disciplinary probe

Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has announced the provincial suspension of Cristiano Ronaldo along with launching a disciplinary investigation against the football star.

The suspension and probe comes after Ronaldo’s sudden walkout from Portugal national team’s training camp following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus.

FPF issued a statement, stating, “The initiation of disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo, by deliberation of the Non-Professional Section, of October 9, 2026, with the purpose of the investigation of any disciplinary relevance of the facts participated on October 7.”

Ronaldo faces an automatic preventive suspension as well as an additional provisional suspension. The FPF has classified the case as urgent.

The measures were triggered by Ronaldo abruptly leaving Portugal's training camp. Ronaldo stated that the coach had previously promised him approximately 30 minutes of playing time in the match.

“Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of establishment, the non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined and the urgent nature was attributed to the process,” the statement reads.

Under Portuguese Football Federation rules, Ronaldo faces a potential fine and a suspension ranging from one to six months. While admitting guilt could lessen his sentence, no final ruling has been made.

The suspension is provincial as the final verdict and decision about the case are yet to be decided. Earlier this week, Ronaldo issued a lengthy statement on why he abruptly walked out of the team and accused Jesus of breaking the promises.

In the statement, he accepted full responsibility and asked the Portuguese Football Federation to punish him without leniency.
