Denmark warns Russia could intensify hybrid warfare in ‘coming months’

Denmark’s defence intelligence services have sounded alarm over possible escalation of Russian hybrid threats against the West in coming months.

In a new threat assessment on Thursday, the intelligence report mentioned that Russia is likely to carry out more frequent attacks against NATO and the western countries “with greater consequences for the countries targeted than in the past.”

Speaking about the possibility of waging military attacks against the countries, the assessment report suggests that there is a low but growing risk that Moscow would launch a limited military attack against one or several NATO countries bordering Russia.

"A limited military attack would be a ‌desperate move on Russia’s part and, like the intensified hybrid attacks, could potentially take place in the coming months," it said.

Russia could also plan deploying a limited number of troops into a NATO border on the grounds of protecting Russian minorities with the aim to divide the defence alliance.

The potential attacks include “isolated strikes with long-range weapons like drones or missiles on infrastructure supporting Ukraine, or false-flag operations using Ukrainian-made drones,” intelligence service chief Thomas Ahrenkiel said at a press conference.

Renewed concerns over hybrid warfare and sabotage on European soil have surged after Germany accused Russia of orchestrating a drone attack near Leipzig/Halle Airport, evoking the EU to mobilize for stronger sanctions.

Moscow has consistently denied involvement in hybrid warfare, NATO sabotage operations, or any plans for confrontation.

Russia has not yet responded to Denmark’s threat assessment report.
