‘Neither wanted to hang up’: Kremlin reveals key details of Trump-Putin call

In a major update, a conversation on Friday between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump was “very substantive and friendly” and neither leader wanted to hang up first, according to Russian news agency Interfact which quoted a Kremlin aide’s statement.

According to reports regarding the call, the presidents agreed that Russia would supply diesel to the US and global markets to lower fuel prices prompting an unexpected temporary easing of US sanctions on Russian fuel that has dismayed Ukraine.

The Kremlin said the main discussion was to settle an issue of the geopolitical tensions in Ukraine with Putin also minimized the chances of three-way peace talks resuming soon.

On Saturday, Interfax cited Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov as the discussion lasted an hour and a half, “ Neither wanted to be the first to hang up. They hung up simultaneously, literally at the same time.”

Kyiv is dependent on American backing in peace talks. After news of the call emerged on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy slammed the diesel deal as an obvious weakness and an investment in a war that now must end.

However, efforts to end the fighting have so far stalled partly over Russia’s demand for four Ukrainian regions it does not fully control. Nonetheless, negotiators from the US, Ukraine and European countries held crucial talks in Miami designed to establish a consensus peace framework in the near future that could be presented to Russia, a source close to the talks said.
