Deadly Philippines school shooting leaves student and gunman dead
by By The News Digital · The News InternationalTwo people have died after a student opened fire at a high school in the southern Philippines, killing another student before turning the gun on himself, officials said.
The shooting happened on Tuesday at a school attached to Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City.
Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso told DZMM radio that the student initially fired at a teacher, although it was not immediately clear whether the teacher was struck.
The gunman then shot another student, who died, before shooting himself, according to Olaso.
University president Ernald Andal confirmed the shooting had ended and said there were no further reported deaths or injuries.
“As of now, we confirm that there are two fatalities. There are no more active shooters,” Andal said.
The shooting comes after another deadly attack at a Philippine school in June. At least three students were killed and around 20 others injured after two students opened fire at a public high school in Tacloban City.
The latest incident also comes less than 10 days after a student carried out a deadly shooting at a school outside Bangkok, Thailand.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive for Tuesday's shooting in Zamboanga.
