Iran villages left without water after US strikes hit water reservoirs

Water distribution has been halted in several villages in southern Iran after US strikes reportedly damaged water facilities in the region, according to Iranian state and semi-official media.

Mehr news agency reported that strikes hit facilities linked to the Hormozgan Water and Wastewater Company.

Abdul Hamid Hamzehpour, chief executive of the company, said two reservoirs were damaged during the attacks.

According to Mehr, the facilities included a 500-cubic-metre tank and a 2,000-cubic-metre tank that supplied drinking water to the Bamani district and the city of Kuhestak.

Water distribution has now been suspended across villages in the Bamani district and Kuhestak, Mehr reported.

Iran’s state-run broadcaster IRIB also reported that two water reservoirs were struck in the attacks near the southern city of Sirik.

The reports come amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States after Washington launched strikes targeting sites in southern Iran following the reported downing of a US Army helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
