Trump claims 'ceasefire is going' after US strikes Iran facilities, which he says were 'just a love tap'

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the ceasefire with Iran remains in place despite a fresh exchange of fire involving American and Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump told ABC News during a phone interview: “The ceasefire is going. It’s in effect", describing the US strikes on Iranian facilities as “just a love tap.”

The comments came after Iran accused the United States of violating the ceasefire by targeting an Iranian oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iranian state media outlet Press TV, the situation later stabilised following clashes between US and Iranian forces in and around the strategic waterway.

“Following the exchange of fire in the past few hours, the situation on Iranian islands and coastal cities by the Strait of Hormuz is back to normal now,” Press TV reported.

US Central Command said American forces struck Iranian military sites linked to missile, drone and small boat attacks against US Navy destroyers travelling through the strait.

“U.S. forces intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with self-defense strikes as US Navy guided-missile destroyers transited the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman, May 7,” CENTCOM said in a statement.

The military added that no US assets were hit and stressed that American forces “do not seek escalation” but remain prepared to defend themselves.
