US attacks Iranian military targets after drone incident in Gulf waters

The United States says it carried out strikes on Iranian military sites in the city of Goruk and on Qeshm Island over the weekend, following what it described as “aggressive Iranian actions” in regional waters.

In a statement posted on X, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation involved “self-defense strikes” targeting Iranian radar systems, drone infrastructure and air defence positions.

According to CENTCOM, the action followed the shutdown of an American MQ1 drone in international waters.

The US military said its forces destroyed “Iranian air defenses, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that posed clear threats to ships transiting regional waters”.

Iran has not immediately commented on the strikes or the US claims regarding the drone incident.

The reported attacks come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region and growing concerns over the security of shipping routes near the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit corridor.

The US has repeatedly accused Iran of threatening commercial and military vessels operating in the area, while Iran has criticised the growing US military presence near its coastline.

The latest developments also come as negotiations between the US and Iran over a broader regional agreement remain uncertain.
