The White House Correspondents’ Dinner has been rescheduled for July 24 after an armed incident forced organisers to cancel the original April event.

On Tuesday, White House Correspondents’ Association president Weijia Jiang confirmed the dinner would proceed later this summer.

“We will not allow an act of violence to have the last word, especially during a year when we are reflecting on the 250th anniversary of America and everything we stand for,” Jiang said, according to CBS News.

Trump also confirmed his attendance in a post on Truth Social, calling the rescheduling “a sign of Strength and Fortitude”.

“This announcement is a very good thing in that we cannot allow Lunatics to change our way of life, or even its scheduling,” Trump wrote.

The president also hinted that his speech could include criticism of the media, writing: “I don’t know whether or not I will give the same rather nasty statements, at least as it concerns certain people, but we will soon find out.”

The event is expected to take place at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, DC.

The annual gathering of journalists, politicians and public figures was called off after a suspect allegedly rushed a security checkpoint near the venue.
