Now, both teams have qualified for the World Cup final, and football fans have gone into conspiracy mode.
But the latest victory by La Albiceleste was snatched at the eleventh hour from the Three Lions.
English players seemed in control after taking the lead in the 55th minute, thanks to Anthony Gordon.
However, Lionel Messi unfurled his time-tested skills and produced an unforgettable turnaround.
He crossed Enzo Fernández in the 85th minute, who, in turn, netted an electric goal, leveling the score.
Not long after, Lautaro Martínez, on the edge of stoppage time, gave a rousing header to advance Argentina into the final.
If Argentina wins, as predicted, it will become the first team to win back-to-back World Cups in over 60 years.
