Kuwait air defences activated after overnight missile and drone attack

Kuwait’s military says its air defence systems intercepted “hostile missile and enemy drone attacks” in the early hours of Wednesday as regional tensions in the Gulf continued to escalate.

In a statement, Kuwait’s army said: “The General Staff of the Army notes that any sounds of explosions, if heard, are the result of air defense systems intercepting the hostile attacks.”

The military urged residents to remain calm and follow official guidance, adding: “Everyone is asked to adhere to the security and safety instructions issued by the relevant authorities.”

Kuwaiti authorities did not identify where the attacks originated from.

However, a Telegram account affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed that “according to published footage and reports coming out of Kuwait” three missiles had “successfully struck enemy bases in Kuwait.”

The latest incident comes days after Kuwait reported repelling drone and missile attacks.

US Central Command later said it had “successfully intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting American forces based in Kuwait,” adding that no US personnel were injured.

The overnight attack also followed reports from Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency of “explosion-like sounds” near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz region.
