Luigi Mangione set to face murder trial in September over Brian Thompson killing

Luigi Mangione's state murder trial over the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson will begin with jury selection on September 8, a New York judge confirmed Tuesday.

Judge Gregory Carro said the high-profile case would proceed on schedule even if some outstanding motions remain unresolved.

The trial is expected to last between six and eight weeks, according to CNN.

Mangione, 28, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, possession of a forged instrument and six weapons charges linked to Thompson's fatal shooting outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel in December 2024.

Mangione is also scheduled to face a separate federal trial on stalking charges in January 2027.

Carro confirmed that jurors in the state trial will remain anonymous, citing concerns about potential harassment and outside influence.

In a written order, the judge said there was a “realistic and substantial risk that prospective and sworn jurors could be subject to harassment, intimidation, or improper outside influence, and that disclosure of their identifying information would meaningfully increase that risk.”

Carro also rejected claims from Mangione's lawyers that access was being restricted, calling the allegations “reckless mischaracterizations” and “without merit.”
