Virginia redistricting vote could reshape US House as Democrats aim to flip key Republican seats

Voters in Virginia have approved a redistricting measure that could significantly shift the balance of power in the US House of Representatives ahead of this year’s midterm elections.

The new ballot measure will redraw the state’s congressional map, potentially allowing Democrats to flip up to four Republican-held seats.

The change could prove decisive in a closely divided House where control may depend on a small number of districts.

The redistricting battle intensified after President Donald Trump urged conservative states to review their maps in an effort to maintain a Republican majority.

Currently, Democrats hold six of Virginia’s 11 House seats, but the revised map could allow them to control as many as 10.

Reacting to the outcome, Trump warned of political consequences if Democrats gain control: “It's going to be a disaster. I don't know if you know what gerrymandering is, but it's not good.”
