Ocarina Of Time Remake Tops Metacritic's GOTY List, And It's High On The All-Time Ranking

Your move, GTA

Just in case you missed it, the Ocarina of Time remake reviews are in, and they are really rather positive. They are so positive, in fact, that the game has shot straight to the top of Metacritic's Best Games of 2026 list, and it's placing comfortably high on the site's all-time rankings.

At the time of writing, the game has a Metascore of 96 based on 81 critic reviews. This has bumped down the previous gold medallist, Sektori, into second, with a score of 93. Resident Evil 2: Deluxe Edition follows in third, also with 93, with The Witcher III: Wild Hunt - Remaster (92) and Big Walk (91) rounding out the top five.

It's an impressive start for the remake, no doubt, but arguably even more impressive is where it already sits on the Metacritic all-timers list. As it stands, OoT on Switch 2 is ranked Metacritic's 27th best game of all time, slotting in above the likes of Skyrim, Half-Life and even other series entries like Tears of the Kingdom and Wind Waker.

The original Ocarina of Time still sits comfortably in the top spot with a Metascore of 99 (the only game to achieve such an accolade), but considering that every game ranked 34-16 on the list has a 96 score, there's every chance that the remake will move up (or down) as more reviews come in and switch up the order.

And for those wondering, yes, this makes OoT the site's highest-rated Switch 2 game to date, beating out Tears of the Kingdom - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (95), Hades II (95) and Breath of the Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (94).

How long OoT remake can retain its position at the top of the 2026 table is another question entirely. To address the neon-soaked elephant in the room, Grand Theft Auto VI is only two weeks away, and we struggle to remember a game ever launching with as much hype. There's every chance that Rockstar's latest might not be quite as well-received as Ocarina, but if anything is going to knock it off the pedestal, it'll be GTA.

A well deserved placement, even if it's perhaps not a replacement for the N64 version
