Who will qualify for T20 World Cup final if India vs England semi-final match is abandoned?
by Naman Jain · Inside Sport IndiaCatch all the details regarding India vs England, T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
India vs England in a T20 World Cup knockout game again. Thursday’s semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium already has history attached to it. It doesn’t get any better than this. Two high-octane teams at a run-making haven.
Suryakumar Yadav’s India face Harry Brook’s England in what will be the third straight T20 World Cup semifinal meeting between the two sides. England had crushed India in Adelaide in 2022 before going on to lift the trophy. Two years later, India returned the favour in Guyana on their way to the title.
Now the rivalry resumes with a place in the final on the line. While fans are hoping for a full contest, one question has lingered in the background. What happens if rain ruins the match?
What happens if the India vs England semifinal is washed out?
The ICC has already put safeguards in place. There is a reserve day scheduled for the semi-final. Match officials also have additional time of 90 extra minutes on the match day and 120 minutes on the reserve day to ensure that at least a five-over contest is possible.
However, if weather completely prevents play across both days and the match is abandoned without a result, the rules are straightforward. The team that finished higher in the Super 8 stage will qualify for the final. That would favour England. Harry Brook’s side topped Super 8 Group 2 with three wins, while India finished second in Super 8 Group 1 with two victories. In that scenario, England would move directly into the final.
Weather forecast and pitch conditions in Mumbai
For now, the weather forecast offers some reassurance. According to AccuWeather, there is a zero per cent chance of rain in Mumbai on Thursday, which should allow the game to proceed without interruption. The pitch designated for the semifinal has already seen two games in the tournament. The West Indies chased down 196 against England there, while Italy chased down Nepal’s 123 with ease in another match.
