by Madhav Agarwal · Inside Sport IndiaLaura Wolvaardt played an innings of a lifetime, as she went on to plunder 169 runs in the Women's World Cup semis vs ENG.
South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt was due for a daddy hundred in the Women’s World Cup 2025, and on Wednesday, in the semis against England, she finally achieved that. The 26-year-old went on a rampage against the English bowlers and scored a massive 169 in 143 deliveries, to take her team to 319/7.

And as the score suggests, she broke multiple records on the way. For starters, she is the first ever skipper in to score a ton in Women’s World Cup, in a knockout match. Apart from that she equalled the record for most 50+ scores in the ODI World Cup, along with India’s Mithali Raj, 13 each, but the South African achieved the feat in only 23 encounters.
Reminds of Harmanpreet Kaur
Now, she is also the highest run-getter in the 2025 edition, and has amassed 470 runs in 8 matches, at an average of 67, including three fifties and a ton. Lastly, she became the first from South Africa to score 5000 runs in ODIs, in women’s cricket. So, that means she is the sixth highest run-getter in women’s ODIs, behind Mithali, Charlotte Edwards, Suzie Bates, Stephanie Taylor, Smriti Mandhana.
Meanwhile, this knock from Laura Wolvaardt is reminiscent of Harmanpreet Kaur’s innings of 171 vs Australia, also in the semis, of the 2017 World Cup. She single-handedly ensured that India moved into the final of that edition. The South African picked up pace after reaching her ton, and smashed 20 fours and four sixes in her stay at the crease.
She got bit of a support from Taznim Brits, who scored 45, Marizanne Kapp (42) and Chloe Tryon (33). Rest of the batters failed to convert starts.
