India squad for Asia Cup 2025: Shubman Gill named vice-captain, no Shreyas Iyer or Yashasvi Jaiswal
by Ansh Athani · Inside Sport IndiaIndia have named a 15-man squad for the Asia Cup 2025.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the India cricket team’s squad for the 2025 Asia Cup. The Mumbai rains delayed the announcements, as BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikat was unable to reach the headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium on time.
Gill named T20I vice-captain
India captain Suryakumar Yadav and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee discussed all things related to the squad before finally announcing a 15-man team for the Asia Cup. Unsurprisingly, Shubman Gill has been named India’s vice-captain. He was handed the deputy responsibilities in white-ball last year and will now assume that role.
No Shreyas Iyer or Jaiswal, Bumrah fit
Gill will be one of the three openers, as Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson retain their spots. This also means that Yashasvi Jaiswal fails to make the cut. Despite having better numbers than Samson and Abhishek in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the southpaw hasn’t been able to break through.
Jasprit Bumrah will also play, confirming that there are no injury concerns. Harshit Rana has been backed over Prasidh Krishna, who was one of the best middle-overs fast bowlers in the IPL. Rinku Singh has also retained his spot despite having underwhelming performances in the last 12 months.
Shreyas Iyer was rumoured to be included in the Asia Cup squad, but as Agarkar pointed out, there isn’t any space for him as of now. Shivam Dube will continue to play in the middle order, a place where Shreyas was expected to feature. But for now both Dube and Rinku Singh continue to be backed.
