Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu creates massive record in Women’s World Cup
by Madhav Agarwal · Inside Sport IndiaChamari Athapaththu is Sri Lanka's leading run-scorer in ODIs, and that too by a massive margin.
Even though Sri Lanka did not have the best outing with the bat against Bangladesh in the Women’s World Cup on Monday, but still skipper Chamari Athapaththu came up with a strong show, scoring 46 from 43 deliveries. And with that she became the first from her country to slam 4000 ODI runs.
Chamari Athapaththu Reaches 4000 ODI Runs
There is hardly any doubt that Chamari Athapaththu is the best batter that Sri Lanka has ever produced, and it is only fair that she is the first one from her country to reach the milestone. The next on the list is Shashikala Siriwardene with 2,029 runs. MADD Surangika is third with 1363 runs followed by Kaushalya, Harshitha Samarawickrama and Nilakshi de Silva.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is yet to win a match in the ongoing Women’s World Cup. They have suffered three losses, and two matches have ended in no results. Despite this poor showing, mathematically, they still have a chance of making it to the semis. But for that they must win all their matches from here on, including the encounter against Bangladesh.
SL Need to Win All Matches
Talking about this World Cup, Athapaththu has been getting starts, but didn’t really go on to make one count. IN the first match vs India she scored 43, followed by 15 vs England, 53 vs New Zealand, and 11 vs South Africa. In fact, in the match against the White Ferns, the team went on to score 258, but it could not be completed due to incessant rains.
Now, the Sri Lankan team has one more match left after the BAN encounter. They will face Pakistan on October 24, which also is a must win match for them.
