Kane Williamson retires from international cricket, LSG head coach role in the offing?

by · Inside Sport India

Speculations are rife, that Kane Williamson could get LSG head coach role; his international retirement is only a step forward in that.

In a shock move, New Zealand legendary batter, and former skipper Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket. This move brings to an end, a glorious 16-year-old career Kiwi, playing 378 matches for his country, scoring 19,346 runs, including 48 centuries.

Kane Williamson bids adieu to international cricket

In a rather emotional statement, Williamson said, “I’ve thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it’s become clear now is the right time. I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand.

Kane Williamson records

  • Most international runs (19,346)
    Most international centuries (48)
    Most international double-centuries (6)
    Most Test runs (9,515)
    Most Test centuries (33)
    Fourth most ODI runs (7,256)
    Fourth most ODI centuries (14)
    Second most T20I runs (2575)
Highest Test average 54.06 (min 20 games)
Second highest ODI average 48.69 (min 20 games)
    40 Tests – 22 wins, 10 losses & 8 draws (2nd most behind Stephen Fleming – 28 wins from 80 Tests)

“Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms. I leave feeling optimistic about where this group is heading. There’s a huge amount of talent, and a real desire to do something special with this New Zealand team. It’s a team I love, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of it for so long. It will continue to be dear to my heart.”

LSG head coach role likely?

Last three seasons for LSG have been poor, in the IPL, to say the least. IN 2024, the side finished 7th out of 10, followed by similar finish in 2025, and now in 2026, the team plummeted to 10th. As per a report in RevSportz, Kane Williamson, who was the team’s strategic advisor this year, could be up for a bigger role in IPL 2027. The team could be done with Justin Langer, who has failed to produce magic with the team.

While there is no real backing to this claim, perhaps just reading between the lines; the assignment with LSG, and the sudden retirement could just mean that..
