The United States Department of State has placed four West African nations under its highest-level travel warning, urging American citizens to avoid Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Guinea due to acute security and health threats.
The Level 4 "Do Not Travel" designation sits at the top of the State Department's four-tier advisory system and indicates that conditions in a given country may be life-threatening.

It also signals that the US government may have little or no capacity to provide emergency assistance to its nationals on the ground.
Security threats driving the advisories
Each of the four countries received its Level 4 classification at different points in 2026. Burkina Faso was designated on 4 May 2026, with the State Department citing militant violence, terrorism, kidnapping, crime and health risks as the primary dangers.

Mali followed on 8 June 2026, flagged for terrorism, kidnapping, crime, civil unrest and health concerns linked to persistent armed group activity across its territory.
Niger's advisory was updated to Level 4 on 9 July 2026, with terrorism, kidnapping, crime and broader political instability listed as the driving concerns.
Guinea's designation, while not dated in the advisory release, reflects overlapping threats including terrorism, crime and health risks, with the department warning that certain parts of the country pose serious dangers to travellers.
Scope and limitations of the warnings
The State Department clarified that the Level 4 designation represents a safety assessment and does not imply that every part of the listed countries faces identical or uniform conditions.
The warnings apply exclusively to American citizens and carry no restrictions on nationals from other countries wishing to travel to these destinations.
The advisories reflect a broader pattern of deteriorating security across the Sahel region, where jihadist insurgencies connected to groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have expanded their reach over the past decade, destabilising governments and displacing millions of civilians across Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger in particular. Guinea's inclusion points to compounding concerns around governance, civil unrest and public health infrastructure.
US grants TPS protection to citizens of 4 countries
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the US had confirmed that nationals from four countries currently hold Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in the United States.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that TPS is a humanitarian designation the US government extends to citizens of nations facing active conflict or other extraordinary circumstances that make it dangerous for them to return home.
