The United Kingdom government has released official guidance setting out the rights of Commonwealth citizens holding a UK Ancestry Visa, covering everything from employment to family and long-term residency options.

The guidance confirms that the visa grants holders the right to remain in the UK for an initial five-year period, during which they enjoy some of the broadest freedoms available under any Commonwealth immigration route.

What UK Ancestry Visa holders can do

On employment, the guidance places no meaningful restrictions on the type of work a holder may take up. Paid and voluntary roles are both permitted, as are full-time and part-time arrangements.

Those who prefer to work for themselves are equally covered, with self-employment and freelance work also falling within the visa's scope.

The absence of an employer sponsorship requirement sets it apart from many other UK work visa categories.

Beyond employment, visa holders are entitled to study in the United Kingdom for the duration of their stay. The guidance also confirms that holders may bring their partner and dependent children with them, allowing families to remain together throughout the visa period without the need for separate applications.

Extending stay or settling permanently

When the initial five-year period comes to an end, holders are not automatically required to leave the country.

The UK government outlines two routes available to those wishing to continue living in the United Kingdom.

The first is an extension of the Ancestry Visa for a further five years. The second is an application for indefinite leave to remain, which removes any time limit on a person's right to live in the country.

The Ancestry Visa is open to Commonwealth citizens who can prove that at least one of their grandparents was born in the United Kingdom. Applicants must be 17 years of age or older, demonstrate that they are able to work, and show a genuine intention to take up employment in the UK once they arrive.

UK states country allowed visas without passports

The initiative is aimed at supporting Ukrainian nationals and family members of British nationals in Ukraine.
