The UK government has published a formal guide detailing the conditions attached to the ancestry visa, clarifying what foreign nationals holding the visa are and are not permitted to do while residing in Britain.

The ancestry visa is designed exclusively for Commonwealth citizens who can demonstrate that at least one grandparent was born in the United Kingdom.

It allows qualifying individuals to live and work in Britain for up to five years, with the possibility of applying for settlement once that period expires.

What Ancestry Visa holders cannot do

According to the official guidance, two key prohibitions apply to holders of the visa. First, individuals who are already in the UK on another type of visa cannot switch into the ancestry category from within the country.

Any application for the ancestry visa must therefore be made before travelling to Britain, as switching to it while already resident is not permitted.

Second, ancestry visa holders have no entitlement to public funds. This covers a broad range of government benefits and financial support programmes available to UK residents, meaning those on the visa must support themselves independently without recourse to state assistance.

Work rights under the Ancestry Visa

In spite of these restrictions, the visa provides significant flexibility when it comes to employment. Holders are free to work in virtually any capacity, covering paid and voluntary roles, as well as full-time and part-time arrangements.

They may work for an employer or choose to be self-employed, giving them wide-ranging options within the British labour market.
