Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has opened up about the heartbreaking reason his mother was unable to watch his Man of the Match performance against Spain at the World Cup on Monday evening.
The small island nation, with a population of just 529,600 people, shocked the football world by holding Spain to a 0-0 draw in their first-ever appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

According to Sky Sports, Spain dominated much of the match and recorded 23 attempts on goal, but the experienced 40-year-old goalkeeper produced a remarkable performance to deny the European giants.
Vozinha made eight important saves to keep a clean sheet and was rewarded with the Man of the Match award after frustrating Spain throughout the game.

His reactions and positioning made him appear almost impossible to beat as he repeatedly stopped the opposition’s attacks.
When the final whistle arrived, Cape Verde’s celebrations were filled with emotion as players and supporters celebrated a result that few expected before kick-off.
Vozinha, who currently plays for Portuguese club Chaves in Liga Portugal 2, has also had spells with teams including Limassol and Zimbru Chisinau during his career.
While his career path may not have placed him among football’s biggest names, he delivered when the spotlight arrived and created one of the most memorable moments of Cape Verde’s football history.

Vozinha explains why his mother’s missed Spain tie
Although most of Cape Verde’s players were emotional because of the pride surrounding their historic World Cup result, Vozinha’s reaction carried a more personal meaning.
After the match, the goalkeeper revealed that his mother was unable to attend because of visa complications and financial challenges, meaning she missed witnessing one of the biggest moments of his career.
According to GOAL, Vozinha said:
“I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents when I was a kid, and they could not be there. They passed away a few years ago. My mum could not be here either for a VISA issue, and the money we had to pay for it. We did not manage to do this in time.”
The absence of his family made an already emotional night even more difficult for the Cape Verde goalkeeper.
A historic night without a special family presence
Atlanta Stadium was missing an important person for Vozinha as he delivered the performance of his life on the World Cup stage.
With only a limited number of supporters travelling from the island nation, his mother’s planned trip was cancelled due to visa and financial issues, problems that have affected several fans and families during the tournament.
Despite the disappointment of not sharing the moment with his loved ones, Vozinha ensured Cape Verde had a night that will be remembered forever after standing tall against one of the strongest teams in world football.
