Thousands pay tribute to Ciara Mageean at special Remembrance Run in Phoenix Park
by Sinead Farrell · The42OVER 4,000 PEOPLE gathered in Dublin’s Phoenix Park today at a special Remembrance Run 5km, where Ciara Mageean’s memory was honoured.
The event brings people of all ages and abilities together to walk, jog and run in memory of loved ones who have passed away.
In what was the 15th edition of the Remembrance Run 5km, participants were invited to dedicate the final 1500 metres of their journey to the late Irish athletics star and European 1500m champion.
Ciara Mageean died last Sunday at the age of 34 following a diagnosis of bowel cancer last year. She represented Ireland at two Olympic Games and won 1500m gold at the 2024 European Athletics Championships.
Hundreds gathered at St Patrick’s Church, Ballyphilip, Co Down, on Tuesday afternoon for her funeral.

This year’s Remembrance Run 5km also featured a minute’s silence, music, poetry and moments of reflection, with the wall of remembrance and big-screen tributes providing participants with an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of those closest to them.
Over €100,000 has been raised for charitable causes at this event in recent years.
“It was wonderful to see over 4,000 people of all ages come together in the Phoenix Park on such a beautiful morning, remembering loved ones while also celebrating their own gift of days and the joy of living,” said event founder Frank Greally.
“Over the years, so many people have told us about the comfort they find in taking part in the Remembrance Run. The minute’s silence before the start, with thousands standing together, each remembering someone special to them, remains an incredibly moving moment.
“This year was particularly poignant as we paid tribute to Ciara Mageean, while also remembering those we have lost from within the wider athletics community. The Remembrance Run is about coming together, sharing memories and appreciating the precious time we have with one another.”
