A police probe is underway after human remains were found on a motorway. The M4 and M48 have been shut off following the grim discovery this afternoon.

The roads were closed in both directions. The move was taken after officers received reports that a person's body had been found on one of the carriageways.

Motorists have been warned of severe disruption as the police investigation is carried out. The probe is centering on The Prince of Wales Bridge, which was previously known as the Second Severn Crossing.

It is the M4 motorway bridge, between England and Wales, over the River Severn. It is operated by National Highways, who said it also affects Junction 20 at Almondsbury, South Gloucestershire.
