The driver of a van is being urgently sought by police after fleeing the scene following a collision with a tram, resulting in a tragic accident that claimed the life of a three-year-old girl. It's believed she was struck by a Mercedes-Benz van right after it collided with a Metrolink tram and careered onto the pavement on Mosley Street in Manchester city centre just before 10am on Saturday.

The incident triggered a massive response from the emergency services, including the dispatch of two air ambulances. The young victim was rushed to hospital but passed away later, according to police confirmation.

In a recent update on Saturday afternoon, Greater Manchester Police announced that they were actively searching for the van driver who absconded post-collision. The impact caused the van to mount the pavement, striking the little girl, GMP explained in their statement to the Manchester Evening News.

"No arrests have been made and a scene remains in place around the Mosley Street, Booth Street and Nicholas Street areas whilst officers conduct their investigation," police said, adding that "The driver of the van fled the scene and officers are following several lines of enquiry to locate him."

Assistant Chief Constable Stephanie Parker offered her deepest sympathies to the family of the young victim, expressing how heartbreaking the event was as the child lost her life despite efforts from responders to save her.

"Our investigation is ongoing and we are investigating a number of lines of enquiry. This is being treated as an isolated incident with no wider threat to the community.

"I thank the public for their patience with the disruption this incident has caused in the city centre and our officers will remain on patrol into the evening. If you have any concerns please speak to our officers and raise them as they are here to help and assist.

"We understand the effect an incident such as this will had had on any witnesses and our thoughts are with everyone concerned.

"We are appealing to any witnesses and anyone who may have seen the van driver leave his vehicle to get in touch with us. Please contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting the log number 1086 of 22/02/25.

"Alternatively, details can be shared on our LiveChat function on our website www.gmp.police.uk or via the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111."
