Greenland future: Trump exchanges ‘force’ for diplomacy
DAVOS, SWITZERLAND - President Trump is dropping plans to add a 10% tariff to goods from eight European countries over their opposition to his push to acquire Greenland.
In a post on social media Trump says he has "formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland" after talks with NATO's secretary general.
Earlier, Trump said he is seeking immediate negotiations to acquire Greenland insisting he won’t use force.
• He tells world leaders at Davos, Switzerland: "We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be frankly unstoppable. But I won't do that"
• He adds: "I don't have to use force, I don't want to use force, I won't use force"
• Trump's wide-ranging speech, in which he regularly seemed to confuse Greenland with Iceland, lasted more than an hour
• As Trump arrived, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told MPs in London he would not "yield" to pressure from the US president on Greenland
