Hasbro cancel Dungeons and Dragons action game helmed by Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order director, leaving studio hunting for new publishing deal
Baldur's Gate series owners reportedly backed out following an early concept of the game
· Rock Paper ShotgunHasbro have opted to pull the publishing plug on the Dungeons and Dragons action game they and developers Giant Skull announced last June. Said plug was reportedly pulled at some point earlier this year, leaving the studio headed by former Star Wars Jedi series director Stig Asmussen hunting for a new publishing deal.
"While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship," a Hasbro spokesperson told Bloomberg in a report confirming the cancellation.
The silver lining is that it sounds like this isn't the end of the road for Giant Skull, with Asmussen telling Bloomberg "things are good" at the studio, while conversations with both Wizards of the Coast and other companies about new publishing deals are ongoing.
Regardless, this cancellation coming less than a year after the game was announced in the glowing, optimistic terms you'd expect is a striking about-face. "In our time working together on God of War I got to see firsthand Stig’s artistry and expertise, and he and the Giant Skull team are the perfect fit for our new game," Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro digital gaming president John Hight said back then. "Worldbuilding and storytelling is in our DNA, and this collaboration reflects our evolution and commitment to our Playing to Win Strategy, building a stronger presence in digital play."
Meanwhile, Asmussen said Giant Skull's goal was to "craft a rich new Dungeons & Dragons universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal".
Assuming it's not also been quietly canned, Hasbro still have Invoke Studios' Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons in the works, with that singleplayer action-adventure about a warrior named Kaatri making a pact to wield otherworldly magic against dark powers having been announced during last year's Game Awards. It was being positioned for 2027 launch as of that reveal. Also on WoTC's RPG plate is the Mass Effect-like Exodus formerly headed up by ex-BioWare dev James Ohlen, which is also currently pencilled in for a 2027 release.
Here's hoping Asmussen and Giant Skull are able to settle on a new project soon.
