First off, I am relieved that it’s not a January 6th screed. Or if it is, that is not in the trailer. At first glance, Jeremy Strong looks amazing in this role, as do the supporting players – Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White. That’s the good.
The bad news is that Hollywood’s moralizing feels very out of date. We don’t need movies to tell us what to think anymore. The entire Hollywood ecosystem has been stuck in this rut for decades, and honestly, if The Social Network had been about that, it would not have been a masterpiece. This has always been the problem with Aaron Sorkin’s work. It was a great way back when, but now, I don’t know. Either way, I’ll keep an open mind. The performances look good.
The ugly:
I mean, Sorkin will have to be compared to David Fincher and that’s like being compared to Alfred Hitchcock — hard act to follow. It doesn’t look like he’s mimicking his style, though. But still, that will hang over the film a shadow. And interestingly, Quentin Tarantino’s thumbprint will hang over The Adventures of Cliff Booth.
