The Centre on Wednesday reconstituted the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) six years after the tenure of its previous panel ended. The 18-member board includes actors Preity Zinta, Pankaj Tripathi, Suniel Shetty, Pallavi Joshi and Prosenjit Chatterjee, along with Grammy-winning musician Ricky Kej. The panel, headed by CBFC chairperson Shashi Shekhar Vempati, will serve for three years or until further orders. The move comes weeks after the board held its first meeting in six years on August 29, despite rules requiring it to meet at least once every quarter.

New Panel
The panel includes several members with links to the BJP or the RSS. Ganguly joined the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while Hans is a BJP leader who represented North West Delhi in Parliament from 2019 to 2024.
Patange, who has been retained, is an RSS pracharak and author. His book, Why Are We in the RSS...?, carries a foreword by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.
Pallavi Joshi is married to filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri and was among the producers and cast members of The Kashmir Files, which had sparked political controversy.
Background
The reconstitution has been carried out under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024. The rules state that each member holds office for a period not exceeding three years, while continuing until a successor is appointed.
Vempati, a Prasar Bharati CEO, was appointed CBFC chairperson in May this year for a three-year term after lyricist Prasoon Joshi stepped down following his appointment as Prasar Bharati chairman.
