TN BJP To Boycott Stalin-Led Meeting On Delimitation, Announces Signature Drive To Support 3-Language Policy

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President K Annamalai has announced that the party will boycott the all-party meeting to be convened by Chief Minister MK Stalin on March 5 to discuss the delimitation issue. In a strongly worded letter to Stalin, Annamalai accused the DMK government of creating “baseless fears” regarding the exercise and politicising the issue. He also declared the launch of a statewide signature campaign in support of the three-language policy under the National Education Policy (NEP).

BJP’s Stand On Delimitation

Annamalai criticised Stalin for alleging that Tamil Nadu could lose eight Lok Sabha seats due to delimitation, said that the Chief Minister was spreading misinformation.

In a letter, Annamalai said, "On behalf of BJP Tamil Nadu, I wish to inform you that you have failed to inform people on the source of your information that the Delimitation exercise would be carried out based on population. Since this is an imaginary and baseless fear you are spreading, we have decided not to participate in the all-party meeting convened on March 5, 2025."

The delimitation issue has led to a political standoff between the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and the BJP-led Centre. While Stalin has argued that delimitation should not penalize South Indian states that have successfully controlled population growth, Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently assured that Tamil Nadu would not lose any seats.

"The injustice to Tamil Nadu happened during the UPA regime when DMK ministers were part of the government. The Modi government is committed to fairness," Shah remarked.

Stalin, however, has reiterated that delimitation should not disadvantage states that have performed well in development and population control.

Three-Language Policy Sign Campaign

Alongside the boycott announcement, Annamalai revealed that the Tamil Nadu BJP will commence a signature campaign on March 5 to advocate for the three-language policy, which proposes Tamil, English, and another language as part of school education.

The three-language formula has been a contentious issue in Tamil Nadu, with the DMK opposing it as a move to impose Hindi on the state.
