The BJP government in Delhi on Saturday, March 8, approved the much-touted Mahila Samriddhi Yojana for eligible women in the national capital. The scheme was approved earlier in the day at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Union Minister JP Nadda said Rs 5,100 crore has been demarcated for the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana launch. "Today, I am happy, and I congratulate CM Rekha Gupta and others that for Mahila Samriddhi Yojan, they have allocated Rs 5100 crore to implement it in Delhi," Nadda said.
However, there is no clarity yet on when the scheme will be launched or implenmented.
What Is The Mahila Samriddhi Yojana?
The Mahila Samriddhi Yojana is an ambitious scheme of the BJP government aimed at providing economic support to women. Under this scheme, women will be provided Rs 2,100 assistance by the government.
The government has formulated specific criteria to ensure that only genuinely needy women benefit from the scheme:
- Women with an annual income of less than ₹2.5 lakh will be eligible.
- Women employed in government jobs and those who pay income tax will be excluded.
- Women already receiving any form of government pension will not be eligible.
Controversy Over Mahila Samriddhi Yojana
The Mahila Samriddhi Yojana has come under fire from the AAP and the Congress. While the AAP has claimed that the BJP has failed in its promise to launch the scheme, the Congress questioned how the BJP planned to fund the initiative.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh said: "The information that is coming to the fore about the Mahila Samridhi Scheme proves that the people of the country should not believe what PM Narendra Modi says. Not even 10% of Delhi's women are going to benefit from this scheme."
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit was quoted as saying by news agency ANI: "If they [BJP] fulfil the promise, we shall welcome it. However, there is only one question: Where will the funds for this come from?"
He further said: "The BJP had said that every woman above the age of 18 would be given this honour. If we go by the Election Commission's data, there were approximately 72 lakh female voters in Delhi. The total cost for this comes to around Rs 21,600 crore. Now, considering the entire development budget is 37,000 crore, which includes hospitals, schools, and subsidies, how can you allocate around 60% of the budget to just one scheme?"
