Congress leader and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel's son Chaitanya Baghel has been sent to a five-day Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody by a special PMLA court in Raipur. He was arrested on Friday by the ED in an alleged liquor scam-linked money laundering case.
Baghel's son was taken into custody under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after raids were conducted at his residence in Bhilai town of Durg district. The senior Baghel said it is Chaitanya's birthday today.
According to a report by the news agency PTI, Chaitnaya was arrested under Section 19 of the anti-money laundering law, as he was allegedly not cooperating during searches conducted following the receipt of fresh evidence in the case.
Earlier today, Bhupesh Baghel posted on X, saying that the ED had come to his residence on the last day of the Assembly session when the issue of trees being felled for a coal mine project of the Adani group in Tamnar tehsil of Raigarh district was to be raised.
In another post, the senior Baghel targeted PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over his son's arrest.
"The kind of birthday gift that Modi and Shah ji give, no one else in any democracy in the world can give. On my birthday, both highly respected leaders sent ED to the homes of my advisor and two OSDs. And now, on my son Chaitanya’s birthday, an ED team is raiding my house," he wrote on X.
"Thank you for these gifts. They will be remembered for a lifetime," Baghel quipped.
"The Congress is creating hindrances and raising legitimate (objections) to Adani’s mining and deforestation activities, which is why such actions are being taken against us," he told news agency PTI.
Congress MLAs boycotted the Chhattisgarh Assembly proceedings for the day as a mark of protest against Chaitanya's arrest, accusing the ED of attempting to harass the opposition.
The ED has claimed that the "scam" resulted in a "massive loss" to the state exchequer, but was profitable for the beneficiaries of a liquor syndicate who allegedly gained over Rs 2,100 crore.
