Mukherjee had been employed as non-teaching staff at an upper-primary school in Bolpur. She was among employees whose appointments were cancelled following legal action over alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff at state-aided schools.

Job Loss After Court Ruling

The recruitment controversy led to the cancellation of around 26,000 teaching and non-teaching appointments. The Calcutta High Court had initially ordered the appointments to be scrapped. The decision was subsequently challenged in the Supreme Court, which upheld the High Court’s order.

The case was linked to allegations of a ‘cash-for-jobs’ recruitment scam in West Bengal’s state-aided schools. The cancellation affected employees whose appointments were under scrutiny.

Mukherjee’s name appeared at number 608 on the list of employees whose appointments were cancelled after the High Court order.

Family members have reportedly linked her mental distress to the loss of her employment, although police have not established whether the job loss was a direct factor in her death.
