Who is B. Sudershan Reddy: Former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy has been named as the Vice Presidential candidate of the opposition's INDIA bloc.

The opposition's INDIA bloc has named former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy as its Vice Presidential candidate. The announcement came even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the opposition to support NDA's VP candidate CP Radhakrishnan.

Announcing Reddy's name as the candidate, Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge said that the opposition is contesting the Vice President election because it is an "ideological battle". 

"Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, will be our Vice-Presidential candidate. We all know how he stood for the poor and protected the Constitution. This is an ideological battle, and all Opposition parties agreed, that’s why we are contesting the election. We have jointly decided to field a common candidate for the Vice-Presidential poll, and I’m happy that everyone agreed on one name; it’s a big moment for democracy," he said. 

Congress MP KC Venugopal also said that the Vice President's election is an "ideological fight," adding that the country is yet to know the reason behind the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar. 

"On one side, we are fighting for the constitutional rights...This country is facing big ideological issues....We are fighting to save the Constitution," he said.

Who Is B. Sudershan Reddy? 

• B. Sudershan Reddy was born in Andhra Pradesh in 1946. He comes from a farmer family and completed his studies in Hyderabad.
• In 1971, he obtained a law degree from Osmania University, and enrolled as an advocate with the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council in Hyderabad on 27 December in the same year. He practiced in writ and civil matters at the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
• Reddy then served as a Government Pleader in the High Court from 1988 to 1990. He was also Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government for a six-month period in 1990.
• On 2 May 1995, Reddy was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. In 2005, he was appointed the Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court.
• On January 12, 2007, he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court, before finally retiring on July 8, 2011.

While announcing the opposition's VP pick, Kharge said that Reddy is one of the most distinguished and progressive jurists in India with a long and eminent legal career.

"He has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic and political justice. He has made many judgments if you read, will know that how he favored the poor people and also protected the Constitution and fundamental rights," he added.
