How Violence Broke Out In Nagpur? Eyewitnesses Recount How Mob Erupted Over 'Aurangzeb Tomb Removal' Calls

Nagpur witnessed violence after calls by a right-wing outfit to remove the tomb of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. Houses were vandalised, vehicles torched, and stones were thrown at the police.

Nagpur Violence: The residents of Nagpur recounted the violence in the city and said that the houses were vandalised and the vehicles were torched. The eyewitnesses narrated how the violence unfolded last night after calls by a right-wing outfit to remove the tomb of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. According to the report, the eyewitnesses claimed that police did not arrive on time, and a BJP lawmaker also accused them of abandoning "Hindu citizens" in the violence.

In the day, the VHP had protested, demanding that the tomb of Aurangzeb be removed from its site in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. The violence broke out around 7:30 pm at Chitnis Park in central Nagpur, after which stones were thrown at the police and several people were also injured.

According to news agency PTI, some residents said that a mob entered the Old Hislop College area near the Chitnis Park and also vandalised four cars and houses. The residents also said that the mob also threw stones at the homes and broke the windows before fleeing.

A clash was also reported from the Hansapuri area hours after the residents recounted that a mob torched their vehicles and vandalised houses and a clinic. Later, a curfew was imposed in parts of Nagpur to ban large gatherings.

According to news agency ANI, a resident named Sharad Gupta said that three people barged into a house but ran away when the residents screamed.

"I saw cars were being pushed out and set on fire. Three people barged into a house but ran away when the residents screamed. They attacked me with stones when I came with a water hose to douse the fire. I called the police multiple times, but they came after the culprits ran away," he told news agency ANI.

Another resident named Chandrakant Kawde said that the culprits firstly broker down the CCTV cameras and then burnt the decoration articles he had kept for the

Ramnavami Shobha Yatra. "The police came an hour after the incident. By then, the violence had ended," he said.

According to ANI, another resident said that the culprits were masked and came with sharp weapons and rods.

"They started chaos in the area when they came, and vandalised shops and threw stones. They also torched vehicles," she told news agency ANI.
