Bengaluru Building Collapse: 1 Dead, 5 Missing As 20 Workers Trapped Under Rubble Amid Heavy Rains

Bengaluru News: A building collapsed during heavy rain, trapping at least 17 workers. This comes as heavy rains have disrupted life in Bengaluru, flooding low-lying areas and roads.

Bengaluru News: An under-construction building collapsed in the Babusapalya area of Bengaluru on Tuesday, trapping at least 20 workers beneath the rubble, according to officials. The incident occurred amid heavy downpour in the city. D Devaraja, DCP (East) Bengaluru informed that one person died out of the 20 trapped workers, 14 were rescued and five are still missing, news agency ANI reported.

Rescue operations are underway with the assistance of two rescue vans from the fire and emergency department, officials confirmed, as per news agency PTI. Previously, a senior police officer stated, “17 people are feared trapped inside the building, and the rescue operation is being carried out in a coordinated effort with help from other agencies.”

A preliminary inquiry into the incident suggests that the entire building collapsed, leading to the entrapment of the workers, as noted by a fire department official. Efforts are ongoing to safely extricate those trapped.

Heavy rains have caused widespread disruption across Karnataka, with Bengaluru being the worst affected. In Bengaluru, low-lying areas have been submerged, severely affecting daily life. Traffic disruptions have escalated due to potholes resurfacing on major roads, creating hazards for two-wheeler riders and hindering the movement of cars and heavy vehicles. Traffic police have been deployed at key intersections to manage vehicle flow and prevent congestion.

Karnataka Government Orders Temporary Relocation of 600 Families Amid Flooding In Bengaluru

Following the torrential rains in Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has directed residents of several apartment complexes to evacuate for eight days due to flooding that threatens their safety. According to news agency IANS, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar addressed the media on Tuesday, stating, "Instructions have been given to close some apartment complexes for eight days in Bengaluru." 

Shivakumar reported that Chowdeshwari Nagar has recorded 150 mm of rainfall, with some areas experiencing rainfall levels up to 300 per cent higher than normal. As a result, around 600 families are being relocated from Kendriya Vidyalaya and Tata Nagar. He mentioned the deployment of five teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assist with the situation.

"Our teams are using 20-25 HP machines to clean the drains, and we are pumping out water from 20 locations," Shivakumar explained, as quoted by IANS. He acknowledged the severe impact of the floods, stating, "Nature cannot be stopped. You’ve seen floods in Dubai and pollution in New Delhi." He further mentioned that the western and southern parts of the city are experiencing significant challenges, with reports of a tank bursting in Dasarahalli and five localities in the Mahadevapura zone affected.

Shivakumar highlighted the continuous efforts of officials, saying, "Our team of officials has been continuously engaged in relief efforts in rain-affected areas for the past 48 hours." He added, "At this moment, conducting relief work is more important than my personal visit to the affected locations." In response to criticism regarding his absence in affected areas, he stated, "It’s not just about my visit. What’s important is that the work gets done."

Bengaluru Rains: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Says Govt ‘Will Provide Necessary Relief’

Farmers throughout the state are anxious about potential losses to their crops, which are nearing harvest. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed the media in Mysuru on Tuesday, assuring that measures are in place to provide relief for damages caused by the rains. "We are closely monitoring the rain-related disasters. All preparations have been made, and site surveys are underway. We will provide the necessary relief," he affirmed.

In Yelahanka, homes in low-lying regions are grappling with waterlogging, with the Yelahanka Old Town Road submerged, causing several vehicles, including a Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus, to stall. Authorities are employing cranes to remove stranded vehicles to clear traffic, IANS reported.

In Chikkabommasandra, over 60 houses have been flooded, and in Ambedkar Nagar, rising water levels have forced residents, including children, to evacuate, creating significant inconvenience and safety concerns. The Manpho Convention Centre and the Manyata Tech Park premises are also affected by waterlogging, attributed to building violations. Other areas like Amrutahalli, Chikkabanavara, and Maruthinagar are similarly struggling with flooding issues. 

As cloudy conditions persist in Bengaluru, heavy rains are forecasted, prompting authorities to remain vigilant.
