Another trouble mounts for former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan as a Pakistan court on Friday convicted him in the £190m Al-Qadir Trust case. As per the details, apart from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, his wife Bushra Bibi has also been convicted in the case.

While Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison, Bushra Bibi was handed a seven-year jail term, as reported by Dawn newspaper. The court has also imposed fines on Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi amounting to Rs 1 million and Rs 500000 respectively. The order stated that failure to pay the fines would result in additional six months in jail.

The verdict was announced by Judge Nasir Javed Rana amid heavy security in a makeshift courtroom at Adiala Jail. Earlier, the verdict had been delayed thrice due to different reasons.

As per the information, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in December 2023 filed the case against Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi and six others, accusing them of causing a loss to the tune of 190 million pounds (PRs50 billion) to the national treasure. However, Khan and Bibi have been prosecuted as all others, including a property tycoon, were out of the country, as reported by PTI.

It is been reported that this case is about allegations that an amount of PRs50 billion, which was returned by the UK's National Crime Agency to Pakistan as part of a settlement with a property tycoon, was misused. According to the report, the money were used for the personal benefit of the businessman who helped Bibi and Khan to set up a university. However, this fund was meant for the national treasury.

As a trustee of the Al-Qadir Trust, Bushra Bibi has been accused of benefiting from this settlement, which includes acquiring 458 kanals of land for Al-Qadir University.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, while speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail ahead of the hearing said, “You can guess the injustice that have occurred over the last two years. “If a fair decision is made, Imran and Bushra will be acquitted,” he added, as reported by Dawn newspaper.
