Rajasthan Civic Results: BJP Scores Big In Jaipur And Udaipur, Cong Wins Key Cities

Rajasthan civic polls show a mixed verdict, with BJP leading in five corporations, Congress ahead in three, Jodhpur tied and Others dominating Bharatpur.

The ruling BJP strengthened its lead over the Congress in Rajasthan’s urban local body elections on Monday, winning 4,171 wards compared with the Congress’s 3,597 as results were declared for more than 10,200 wards. The verdict in key municipal corporations was mixed, with the BJP making strong gains in several cities while Congress held its ground in others. Independents also emerged as a significant force, winning 2,272 wards across the state. The results are being closely watched ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.

BJP Leads Overall

The BJP secured clear victories in Udaipur, Bhilwara and Kota, winning 53, 45 and 53 wards respectively. It also edged ahead of Congress in Jaipur and Alwar.

Congress emerged victorious in Bikaner and was leading in Ajmer and Pali. In Ajmer, Congress won 37 wards against the BJP’s 32, while Independents secured 11. In Pali, Congress won 29 wards, compared with 21 for the BJP and 15 for Independents.

Jodhpur saw a closely fought contest, with both BJP and Congress winning 44 wards each. Independents secured the remaining 10 seats.

Independents Make Strong Showing

Bharatpur produced one of the most unusual results. Independents won or led in 36 of its 65 wards, while the BJP secured 20 and Congress seven. The BSP and RLP won one ward each. Bharatpur is Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma’s hometown.

Across Rajasthan, Independents won 2,272 wards, potentially making them decisive in several urban local bodies. The RLP won 63 wards, AAP 42, CPI(M) 38, BSP 19 and BAP eight.

Results had been declared for 10,210 of the 10,244 wards where counting was held by 5.45pm. Polling across 309 urban local bodies took place in two phases on September 9 and 11. A total of 10,245 councillors are being elected across 10 municipal corporations, 51 municipal councils and 248 municipalities.

The elections are being viewed as a key test for the BJP government led by Bhajanlal Sharma and the Congress ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls.

The next major stage will be the election of mayors and chairpersons on September 21, followed by deputy mayors, deputy chairpersons and municipal vice-presidents on September 22.
