Maharashtra Police on Saturday made its first arrest in connection with the Satara doctor's suicide case. Prashant Bankar, one of the two accused named in the doctor's suicide note on her palm, was arrested by the Phaltan police.

Bankar, a techie and the son of the deceased's landlord, will be produced in court today, SP Satara Police Tushar Doshi said, as reported by news agency ANI.

In her suicide note, written on her palm, the doctor alleged that sub-inspector Gopal Badane had raped her multiple times, while Prashant Bankar, a software engineer, had mentally harassed her.

Following the allegations, a case of rape and abetment to suicide was registered against both men. "One of the accused, Bankar, has been arrested and brought to Phaltan. The investigation is underway," an official told news agency PTI.

Police said Bankar is the son of the landlord of the house where the doctor was staying. The deceased had reportedly spoken to him over the phone and exchanged messages shortly before ending her life.

Sub-inspector Badane has been suspended from service after his name surfaced during the probe, officials added.

Meanwhile, leaders from across party lines have demanded an independent inquiry and SIT probe into the doctor's death. The Opposition targeted the Mahayuti government over the incident.

Meanwhile, according to a purported reply the woman doctor had submitted to police authorities in Satara district after a subordinate officer complained about her, she had alleged facing threats from senior officials over her style of working, as well as taunts about crimes reported in her home district of Beed.

A relative of the deceased also claimed that she was frequently pressured by police personnel to alter post-mortem findings and modify medical test reports of arrested individuals brought to the hospital.
