Canada's ruling Liberal Party has been projected to win the country's federal election on Monday, in what could be a turnaround of its fortune catalysed by US President Donald Trump's tariff strike and annexation threats.

According to CBC News projections, Liberals are likely to form the next government. However, it is too soon to say whether the Liberals will steer clear of the halfway mark.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is also projected to win his Ontario's Nepean constituency, securing his first-ever seat in the House of Commons.

The Liberal Party went for an early lead as voting ended in the North American country to elect 343 members to the House of Commons, the Lower of House of the Parliament.

In the initial trends, Liberal Party led on 72 seats while the Conservative Party headed by Pierre Poilievre maintained a lead on 58 seats as voting closed in several constituencies including Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

Trump's Threat, Bullying

The Liberals who are now projected to retain their seat for the consecutive fourth term in the federal government were once looking ahead to a crushing defeat until Trump started attacking Canada's economy and threatening its sovereignty.

Trump's suggestion that Canada becomes the 51st state of the United States and slapping of reciprocal tariffs stoked a surge in nationalism helping Liberals flip the election narrative.

Trump's trolling did not stop until the election day when he suggested Canadians should vote for him to make the country the 51st state.

He also erroneously claimed that the US subsidises Canada, saying: "It makes no sense unless Canada is a State!”

Poilievre, who has been criticised for not taking a firm stance against Trump sharply criticised the remark, asking him to stay out of Canada's elections.

“President Trump, stay out of our election. The only people who will decide the future of Canada are Canadians at the ballot box,” he posted hours before polls closed. “Canada will always be proud, sovereign and independent and we will NEVER be the 51st state.”
