As many as twelve more people were arrested in connection with the violent protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in West Bengal's Murshidabad district, which has claimed lives of three people, police said on Sunday. A total of 150 people have been arrested so far now, with adequate police forces deployed in Samserganj, Dhuliyan, Murshidabad.
BJP MP from West Bengal has also requested that select border districts of Bengal be declared "disturbed areas" under AFSPA amid rising communal attacks. Meanwhile, the local residents who were frustrated due to the "chaos and hooliganism" demanded that "president's rule" be imposed in the violence-hit region.
No new incident of violence was reported from anywhere in the Muslim-majority district as security forces kept a close vigil following court's order.
Here are the top updates on violence in Bengal's Murshidabad:
- Police arrested twelve more accused of involvement in Murshidabad violence, increasing the total number of arrests to 150. "The situation in Suti, Dhulian, Samserganj and Jangipur areas of the district is peaceful. Raids continued overnight, and 12 more people were arrested," a senior police officer said, as reported by news agency PTI.
- BJP Lok Sabha MP from West Bengal, Jyotirmay Singh Mahato wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting that certain border districts of West Bengal be declared "disturbed areas" under AFSPA due to alleged repeated communal attacks on Hindus.
The development comes a day after the Calcutta High Court on Saturday ordered the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Murshidabad district, holding that it cannot turn a blind eye to reports of vandalism.
- Meanwhile, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Sunday said that the conditions being created for appeasement of votes during the tenure of Mamata Banerjee government are "unfortunate and condemnable".
"In recent times, especially on the occasion of Ram Navami and continuously ever since, the Hindu majority has been tortured and left to burn, temples are being vandalised and women are being molested, and still the state government is silent just for votes, which reminds us of the times of Bengal Partition. But I believe the conscience created will set Bengal free of these incidents with the upcoming elections and BJP government will be formed in West Bengal," he said, while commenting on CM Mamata Banerjee's statement on Waqf Amendment Bill. - The court said this direction will not be restricted to Murshidabad district only and should be extended to other districts faced with similar situation as and when required. It said the central forces may be deployed immediately to arrest the situation and bring normalcy.
- The court also noted that apart from Murshidabad, violence-related incidents were reported from Amtala in South 24 Parganas district, in North 24 Parganas district, and at Champdani in Hooghly.
- After the violence broke out, prohibitory orders were imposed under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the violence-hit areas. Internet has also been suspended, PTI reported.
- The security forces are checking vehicles on the main roads, and patrolling the sensitive pockets, a police officer told PTI "An investigation is underway into the incidents of violence. More arrests are likely," he added.
- Violence broke out in the Murshidabad district during the protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act on Friday. Several vehicles, including police vans, were set ablaze, stones were hurled at security forces, and roads were blocked as violence spread to various parts of Bengal. Some flare-ups were also reported on Saturday.
- The bodies of a man and his son with multiple stab wounds were found at their home in Jafrabad in Samserganj on Saturday. They were identified as Harogobindo Das and Chandan Das, according to the police.
- Another 21-year-old man, identified as Ijaz Momin, was killed on Saturday after being shot during clashes at Sajur More in Suti on Friday. At least 18 policemen were injured in the violence on Friday.
