A 40-year-old woman from Delhi was murdered in cold blood by her husband under the pretence of taking her to the Maha Kumbh pilgrimage in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
The couple had arrived in Prayagraj on February 18 from Delhi's Trilokpuri area. The husband, dutifully recorded videos and snapped photos of their time together and sent them home to their children, painting a happy picture of their journey.
They checked in a homestay in Azad Nagar Colony under Jhunsi police station limits to spending the night. However, the next morning, the homestay manager found the blood-soaked body of the wife and immediately alerted the police, reported NDTV.

The police reached the spot and found that the woman's throat had been slit with a sharp weapon. The photo of the woman was widely widely circulated on social media platforms and published in newspapers.
On February 21, the woman's relatives came forward to identify her. The victim was identified as Meenakshi, the wife of Ashok Kumar, a resident of Trilokpuri in the national capital. Police registered a case before they tracked down Ashok Kumar and arrested him.
During the interrogation, the accused confessed to his crime and revealed that he had been plotting his wife's murder for three months. Ashok, who worked as a sanitation worker, was reportedly involved in an extramarital affair and in order to pursue his illicit relationship, wanted to eliminate his wife.

As per the report, the couple left for Prayagraj on February 17 and booked a homestay the next day. On the night of February 18, an argument broke out between the two after which Meenakshi went to the bathroom. Ashok seized the opportunity and attacked her from behind slitting her throat with a knife. He then changed his blood-stained clothes, wrapped the murder weapon in them, and discreetly disposed of the evidence.
He also attempted to create an alibi by calling his son Ashish and falsely claiming that Meenakshi had gone missing in the crowded fair. However, their other son, Ashwin got suspicious of his father's explanation. On February 20, he came along with other family members to the Maha Kumbh Mela with their mother's photograph and began searching for her.
Forensic reports, surveillance footage and conflicting statements by Ashok led to his arrest.
