In a significant leadership reshuffle, senior BJP leader Nainar Nagendran is expected to take over as the Tamil Nadu BJP President, replacing K Annamalai, who is set to vacate the position.

Nagendran, a seasoned politician and a prominent figure from Tirunelveli, commands considerable influence within Thevar community. His elevation is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to strengthen its base in southern Tamil Nadu, particularly ahead of the next assembly elections.

From AIADMK Minister To BJP’s Face In The South

Nagendran’s political journey began with the AIADMK, where he served as Minister for Electricity and Industries from 2001 to 2006. He was elected as MLA from the Tirunelveli constituency in 2006 and 2011 under the AIADMK banner, reported DT Next.

After being overlooked for a cabinet berth during Jayalalithaa’s 2011–2016 term, internal speculation about his sidelining grew. Yet, he remained loyal to the AIADMK through that period, only parting ways in 2017, following the demise of the party supremo. In 2019, he officially joined the BJP, becoming one of several AIADMK defectors.

Rising Through BJP Ranks

Since his induction into the BJP, Nagendran has steadily risen through the party ranks. He was appointed State Vice-President in July 2020 and went on to win the 2021 Assembly election from Tirunelveli as a BJP candidate within the AIADMK-BJP alliance.

Although he contested both 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections—and lost—Nagendran continued to enjoy the confidence of the BJP’s central leadership. Notably, Home Minister Amit Shah campaigned for him during the 2021 state elections, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in two of his rallies during the 2024 general election campaign, reported South First.

Nainar Nagendran: A Game Changer For 2026?

The BJP faces multiple challenges in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The state government has been at odds with the BJP-led Centre on several key issues, including the three-language policy under the NEP, alleged Hindi imposition, and the NEET exam. Against this tense backdrop, the BJP is working to chip away at the DMK’s vote share and make a serious bid to form the government.

As part of its strategy, the party is appointing a candidate with perceived support from AIADMK — a move aimed at mending ties after friction between the AIADMK and outgoing TN BJP chief K Annamalai, who had made controversial remarks about AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa. The move also comes as BJP is aiming to ally with the 'two-leaves party' in Tamil Nadu. Despite his national profile, Annamalai also had internal conflicts within the BJP's state unit. The new appointee, Nainar Nagendran, now carries the additional responsibility of unifying the party’s base.

While Nainar may draw support from certain dominant communities, a key challenge will be consolidating votes across the state’s diverse social fabric.
