BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul Backs MP Nishikant Dubey Amid Row Over Judiciary Remarks

BJP MLA from West Bengal, Agnimitra Paul, has supported party MP Nishikant Dubey after his comments against the Supreme Court created a big controversy. She questioned the power of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and said the Parliament should not be ignored.

Paul said, “He has said the right thing. The President appoints the Chief Justice of India. Then how can the CJI deny the President’s order? How can he deny the decision of the MPs and policymakers of the nation? If the country is run by the CJI and the Supreme Court, then there is no need for the Parliament. Everything should be done by the CJI then.”

Earlier, Dubey had said, “If the Supreme Court has to make laws, then Parliament should be shut down.” He also accused the top court of "inciting religious wars" and said it was overstepping its limits. Dubey added, “The top court has only one aim: 'Show me the face, and I will show you the law'. The Supreme Court is going beyond its limits. If one has to go to the Supreme Court for everything, then Parliament and the State Assembly should be shut.”

BJP President JP Nadda's Reaction

National President of Bharatiya Janata Party reacted on Nishikant Dubey's remarks and posted on X. In his X post, he said that the party has nothing to do with the statements made by Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma on the judiciary and the Chief Justice of the country.

He wrote, "The Bharatiya Janata Party has nothing to do with the statements made by BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma on the judiciary and the Chief Justice of the country. These are their personal statements, but the BJP neither agrees with such statements nor does it ever support such statements. The BJP completely rejects these statements. Bharatiya Janata Party has always respected the judiciary and gladly accepted its orders and suggestions because as a party we believe that all the courts of the country including the Supreme Court are an integral part of our democracy and are the strong pillar of the protection of the Constitution. I have instructed both of them and everyone else not to make such statements." 

This controversy comes while the Supreme Court is hearing a case on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The court raised concerns about some parts of the Act, especially the ‘Waqf by user’ clause. The government said it would not use these parts of the law until the next hearing on May 5.
