Russian drone strikes hit a residential building in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv ahead of a crucial meeting in Washington, D.C. between Ukraine, European, and US leaders. Kharkiv's mayor said on August 18 that at least seven people were killed and more than 20 injured. The city of Zaporizhzhya was also hit by deadly strikes.
