The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Israelis and Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

An attacker from the Israeli-occupied West Bank killed two people in a car ramming and stabbing attack in northern Israel on Friday, the Israeli authorities said.

The Israeli police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the attack, in Israel’s Galilee region, was terrorism.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank as Israel continues a monthslong crackdown on militants there that has resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of people.

A male pedestrian was run over in Beit Shean near the Israeli border with Jordan, the police said, and a young woman was then stabbed nearby. Magen David Adom, an Israeli emergency rescue service, confirmed the deaths of both people. It said two others had sustained minor injuries.

A civilian opened fire on the attacker, who was later taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, the police said.
