Microsoft Reveals the Surface Laptop Ultra with Nvidia RTX Spark and 128GB RAM

Microsoft has officially opened pre-orders for the Surface Laptop Ultra, a formidable new workstation engineered specifically for developers, creative professionals, and AI researchers. Slated to begin shipping on October 16, the machine abandons the mainstream consumer market in favor of delivering uncompromising local computing power and workstation-class AI capabilities in a portable chassis.

The Surface Laptop Ultra is built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform, offering configurations with either an 18-core or 20-core CPU. Graphics are driven by Nvidia’s next-generation Blackwell architecture, scaling up to 6,144 GPU cores. The system supports a massive 128GB of unified memory and is capable of reaching one petaflop of FP4 AI compute. By prioritizing raw localized performance, Microsoft aims to let professionals run demanding AI models and agentic workloads directly on the hardware, drastically reducing the latency and cost of cloud reliance.

Storage options max out at 2TB, utilizing user-upgradeable solid-state drives.

Visuals are handled by a 15-inch Mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen. The panel retains Microsoft’s signature 3:2 aspect ratio, ideal for productivity and coding, while pushing peak brightness to a blinding 2,000 nits. Below the keyboard, Microsoft has integrated a haptic touchpad that is 30% larger than those found on its standard 15-inch Surface laptops.

Despite the internal firepower, the Surface Laptop Ultra maintains a relatively portable profile. It measures 18mm thick, weighs approximately 4.5 pounds, and is available in Platinum and Nightfall finishes.

Port selection is notably robust for a modern Surface device. It includes USB-C, USB-A, an HDMI port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a full-size SD card reader. Microsoft is also debuting “Magnetic Connect,” a proprietary interface that handles power, data, and video transmission through a single, easily detachable magnetic cable.

Pricing reflects the laptop’s professional-grade ambitions. The base model, equipped with 24GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, starts at $2,599.99. Stepping up to 1TB of storage pushes the price to $2,999.99, while the 32GB RAM variant costs $3,299.99. For ultimate performance, the top-tier configuration featuring 128GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage will set buyers back $5,899.99.
