Topline

An explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department training center killed at least three deputies Friday, prompting state and federal officials to offer support as the cause of the explosion is not yet clear.

Key Facts

Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the explosion, calling it a “horrific incident” and saying federal agents were on scene.

Aerial footage from KTLA 5 showed a sheriff’s department vehicle with a shattered windshield and a backpack near the department’s explosives trucks in the parking lot.

Although the cause of the blast has yet to be disclosed, the explosion occurred as the bomb squad was moving explosives, according to the Los Angeles Times, which noted the training center is home to the sheriff’s special enforcement bureau and the arson explosive detail, which includes the bomb squad.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom was briefed on the explosion and offered “full state assistance” to the sheriff’s department.

Los Angeles Fire Department and federal arson investigators are assisting at the training facility, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said.
